Poetry
Poetry Hour
Regularly chaired by Jim Stewart in the University's College Hall, this successful series of free
late-afternoon events has attracted young and old, students and public, to readings by poets
like Tim Morris, Gordon Meade, Andy Jackson and Jim Stewart himself. The after-reading exchange
of thought between audience and artist was particularly popular, and a new round of 'hours'
is planned for the autumn. With people like Tracey Herd agreeing to come on board, the Poetry
Hour promises to increasingly glitter in the firmament of the Literary Dundee calendar.
Poetry in Creative Writing
The importance of Poetry, or poetics, to various genres of creative writing is
irrefutable, and the
'Wordcraft' sessions tutored by Jim Stewart play a suitably prominent part in
many undergraduate
and postgraduate modules at the university. Even prosifiers on the modules benefit from the
transferable skills in these more broadly-pitched sessions. Entry to these courses depends upon
submission of written work in advance to Kirsty Gunn at
k.j.gunn@dundee.ac.uk and/or to Jim Stewart at
j.c.q.stewart@dundee.ac.uk. Poetry
, in a more specific and more
narrowly-defined form, is the subject of modules under Jim Stewart's tutelage planned for
the autumn/winter Continuing Education programme at the university. 'Making a Poem' is the
first module, and Jim describes this as a pre-requisite for the three subsequent modules.
